The Big Fuzzy

The Big Fuzzy
Written By: Caroline Castle
Illustrated By: Daniel Howarth

Summery:

The Big Fuzzy is a 24 page book that takes place in a land of ice and snow, Greenland. Little Sira and her baby brother Ivik, left the comfort of their igloo to go find some food. Their mother was home sick and they needed fish for dinner.

With Ivik tied to her back, Sira set off to go fishing. When they arrived at the fishing hole, Sira got her first fish. She did not realize that a big fuzzy white polar bear was watching them. As she kept on catching the fish, Ivik yelled Big Fuzzy and gave them to the polar bear. Ivik was having so much fun feeding the polar bear that he did not realize nighttime was creeping up on them.

Getting ready to go home before it was totally dark and stormy, Sira turned around to collect all the fish she caught. To her dismay, they were all gone. Disappointed but needing to reach shelter, Sira turned to go home. She was so little and so tired, that she headed toward a cave and fell asleep. Little did she know, the big white polar bear was watching them.

This is a very playful book. As Sira woke up from her sleep, she was in front of her igloo with one large fish form them to share.

Pros:
  • Fosters imagination
  • Creative
  • Mysterious
  • Humorous
  • Nice colorful illustrations
  • Clever story line
  • Suspenseful
Cons:
  • Nothing.
Suggestions:
  • Until I read this book, it had not really occurred to me to teach the girls about Greenland. After reading this book I did some research and found some interesting facts about Greenland. Now every time we read this book I tell then a neat fact like Greenland is so cold even in the summer that very few people live there. They also have some fun animal facts like the second to largest shark, the greenland shark lives in the seas. These fun facts are fun to talk about as you read the book.
  • This is more of a sensory activity, but you can make  Fake Snow with them. Hidden in the snow, you can have some Plastic Fish and a White Polar Bear. I find that children with sensory issues might be inclined to act out the silly parts of the book while touching the snow. If you child does not have sensory difficulties, then you can make up fun activities or do some math. For example if Sira caught three fish and Ivik fed the polar bear one fish, how many fish are left. The possibilities are endless.
Age Range:
  • 3 and up
  • Children looking for a mystery book
  • Children interested in suspenseful books
  • Children who like an age appropriate scare
Overall:

This book is one of the most well written books I have seen. It really has a little of everything in it. It starts off with the mother telling the children to be safe from the polar bear when Ivik sees one. This adds some suspense. After that the humor comes in when Ivik is feeding the fish to him. When Sira is done fishing she gets sad and tried and has to lie down. As she is sleeping it gets a little scary as the large polar bear sneaks up on them. The book ends so beautiful when the polar bear not only brings them home, but he leaves them a large fish.

The Big Fuzzy is just one of the books that every child should read. It has so many different parts to it, yet it is so simple to understand, that it is a great asset to any library.
