ARIPPU AND VALA FILTER THE NET

1. Vati katti

In the kitchen the mostly used vatikatti to drain out the excess water from
boiled sized vegetables for koottan , mezhukkupuratti, thoran etc is the first
application coming to my mind. Earlier it was a vessel in circular fashion with
holes drilled as a filter with bigger holes. But now a day the metal vessel as
netted sides is available and drains excess water quickly.

2. Chipple and Kan Chattukam( Kannappa)

Before the days of Pressure cooker and rice cooker chipple was used to drain
water from cooked rice. Kan chattukam is used while frying in oil papad etc to
drain all oils from it and take out. To see the patham( condition of the boiling
item too Kanchattukam is felt most convenient.

The most important application of Kan aappa is during sraadha, to bring Agni as
kanal from the kitchen to the homakunda. Most people use one kan aappa full
rice immediately after cooking to feed the crows- I think it is a nithya
sraadha. Something is felt unhappy if on a day food is taken with out feeding
crow by most Brahmins.

3. The vatti
The vatti is made from sized bamboo making it in to thin stripes and caning.
During feasts rice is cooked in Chembu and water on correct boiling is taken out
using a vatti.

4. Oil filter

To keep the fried oil Chuttenna, removing bits of fried items from the oil,
oil filter in the size of a small half ball is used. Mostly now a day the
material here too very tiny metal wires. This chuttenna is liked by many with
Iddali Mulakaipodi or add to Chutni for frying. Chutni fried with curry leaves
has special taste. Many use chuttenna for aviyal too to give special taste.

5. Arippu

The arippu is used to filter out large pieces from the wheat powder, rice powder
done in machine. The arippu is a circular vessel having the bottom with a
closely knitted net. It has less height comparing to the diameter. Actually the
bottom is a tiny knitted net . This too now a day tinned metal. The bottom is
removable and to change with different sizes of the tiny holes required while
filtering.

The filter with bigger holes is used to filter other items coming with different
sizes of pulses etc.

6. Removal of "aata"

Many people do not like the sticky items coming up from the boiled milk. It is
actually protein and other contents coming as paada or aata. It is filtered
using tiny filters.

7. The cleaner container

I do not know what the local name it has , a rectangular conical container with
handle and all along sized thick metal wire net of 1"x1" is used by servants to
take all cleaning vessels out and after cleaning to bring the vessels back. The
bottom has got rests and excess water will drain from cleaned vessels. I first
found it in Dubai spinnies and brought as fancy. But after bringing it I found
the same is available in many important shops with better quality stainless
steel net.

8. The mosquito nets

Yester years mosquito nets were available in textile shops. It was a cotton net
having five sides and tied above the cot so that all sides and top are well
covered .For sleeping peoples slightly used to raise the net and get in. It was
made of cotton.

When cot was no there it was tides to the walls on nails fitted. Actually in
these nets four sides were less knitted comparing to top. If any flying tiny
creature falls, the top supported it.

In hospitals now too we can see the net on coats for the patients bed. But
however now availability is rare unless we go for some special shops. Now most
use the good night or similar type mats, liquid, odomos etc to ward off
mosquito. However while dengue fever appear I have seen advertisements to use
the net told above for effective prevention. I still recollect the sweating
experiencing under net even with fans.

9. Mosquito net at windows.

Earlier these were tiny nets made of polythene or similar material and made in
to a frame attaching a mutual pressing material to the ends and made to the
size of widow. The same material was pasted to the window frame and on pressing
the net it got pressed to the windows. Being costly some used alternate
arrangements like metal holders in to which the net was inserted which held the
net tight with window. This was the arrangement in our Staff quarters at
Trivandrum

By about 2004, aluminium or nylon nets fitted to a aluminium frame, which was
hinged to the window started, appear. Due to prohibitive cost , many could not
afford. However it gave a neat appearance like another knitted door for
windows, which could be opened, cleaned with brush and closed and gave a
majestic look to the window. It had the added advantage specially when the net
is metal no creatures could get, it has become an insect net. The colour of
frame in different colour, sturdy quality net, neat mechanical fitting to frame,
handles, hinges opening to 180 degree and all made the net popular though
costlier.

In Chennai the netting is charged about 120 rupees per square feet. It
effectively prevents insects and permit above 70 % window flow. On installation
we may first feel the breeze has reduced more than 50%, but getting accustomed
we will not feel it. The net is also an excellent dust preventar for the
window.

ARIPPU AND VALA PART 2
(FILTER &THE NET)

10. Filter/ net in the air conditioner unit

Many of the members may be recollecting the instruction to take out wash in speedy water and refit the filters in the split AC units once a while, and enjoyed the improved cooling effects.

11.Netted fencing in the compound wall.

Many people make a netted fencing above the compound walls of about 7 feet height for a height of 2. This helps much to prevent cats jumping and some times to grow creeping plants like bitter guard or betel plant etc.

Some people maintain one side of the house with close fencing only, for vasthu.

12. Steel cots

In steel cots of the hostels and hospitals instead of plain sheet, a sturdy steel net attached with springs at end was used and fitted on the rectangular frame of the cot on which we were relaxing. This remarkably reduced the weight of the cot and cushioning effect to cot. In fact a net is used over a number of erect springs for the sofa for cushioning effect. Some sofas use thick cushion just over the springs fitted

13. Net in construction work.

A closely knitted iron wires are fitted in to a rectangular frame of about 3-4 inches height and sand is filtered for construction works. The size of net decides the size of sand. Coarse ones are used for spreading in the front of houses in earlier times as it is and now days with cement mixed for a slipping free frontage. In the latest arrangements using them cement blocks are made and jointed giving still neat and aesthetic look.

14. Net over open well

Earlier days it was common to keep the top of wells open after constructing walls above it for about 3-4 height. If vegetation was near it was a practice to put a net of nylon etc over it.

But now a day 90% of open wells are covered with a metal net over iron frame fixed with a locking door arrangements if necessary to get in. 99 % of open wells in cities are with motor for pumping water.

15 Netted wall gate

Now a day most of the gates are fitted with a netted bottom or body itself. This prevents snakes etc not getting in from outside and specially for cats not entering minimising their body.

16. Lofts, shades and slabs

In Tamilnadu for making lofts, shades and slabs sturdy iron net is used made of thick rods welded and available. Hence thickness of slabs used in Tamilnadu is 50% less than in Kerala, where using nets is not so common

17. Fishing industry etc

Net made of nylon or fibre is used for catching fish from the sea and river.

Coired closely knitted mats are used also as foot mats by many. The choodi kattil common in Tamilnadu is a net of quality coir ropes made to thin size.

Once nylon knitted bags were very common to bring things. Now it is not common.

About a year back polythene fibres knitted in to a rectangular form was available in markets at T Nagar to keep cloths for washing. Now too it is seen, but fancy is not there.

18. Netted Banians

Many workers prefer to wear really netted form of cotton as Banian. This gave much relief on sweating. Now too netted banians of this type are available in textile shops.

19. Filters in human body

There are bodily filters seen and not seen. Our hairs in the ear and nose are dust filters not entering in to.

Kidney is a filter, which is not visible inside the body, which do all filtering works in the body. KIDNEY SIZE IS EQUAL TO THE SIZE OF OUR CLOSED FIST AND THERE ARE TWO IN OUR BODY. In healthy one is sufficient, but in persons with kidney problems both will fail one after the other if not cared to.
20 Technical filters

Most of the equipments have power filtering system, for smooth current either AC or DC.

Because filtering only the middle band of human frequency what we hear in person is some times different from what we hear on phone.

There are filter systems in the automobile machines. Our Power plants in Telecom installations employ DC and use a number of filters for avoiding ripples after conversion from AC. The sine form, square form etc is beyond the scope of this posting.

21. Berlin wall and net

Some members may be recollecting the netted Berlin wall.

In airtel network once a netted wall and child with a ball was used for advertisement if I recollect.

22. Phrases and sayings

I will conclude this posting with two sayings about filter and net. One is " arichu perukki" (filtered and got). This phrase is used to mention, with much strain.

Another is "Valayttu veesiyal" (If you spread the net)

This is used to mean the person has escaped beyond search.
